The "lie" of grief is that we are alone in our experience. There is a sincere inclination that we must draw into ourselves, into our archive of memories, and suffer in isolation. When my clients begin their therapeutic work, I recognize that they have already initiated the transformation that takes place in grief. It requires resilience, inertia, and rebellion to reject that initial thought that suffering has to be done in isolation. My clients enter grief counseling in a feat of reconciliation, not only to their lost loved ones, but to the people that remain, and, inexplicably, to themselves.
