I'm broken. A phrase many of us have at one point quietly carried, sometimes for years. Which makes sense in a culture that subtly suggests difficult emotions should be managed quickly, reframed positively, or pushed aside altogether. That sadness, anger, confusion, grief, or numbness signals that something has gone wrong and only the easy-to-explain parts of us are acceptable. But feeling deeply isn’t a malfunction. It’s a human response to lived experience. Therapy is often misunderstood as a place people go when they’re “too much,” not enough, or fundamentally flawed. Something to fix before returning to real life.
